A Look Inside My Purse

Ok ladies, time to clean out that purse!

If you are like me, this happens about once a month, along with something else we just love (said very sarcastically). Women love handbags, but when it comes down to every day use, most tend to stick with one favorite bag that coordinates with just about everything they wear.

Switching to another, perhaps smaller purse, is usually confined to special events or outings. There is usually not enough time for most of us to switch out contents on a daily basis. Before long, that purse is bursting at the seams, begging for some relief.

So go ahead, just dump it out and start your reassembly. It is amazing what you will find in there, isn’t it? This is the time when you thank God that you had the sense not to buy one of those trendy see-through purses! Ugh. So what’s in there?

Checking out a woman’s handbag can be a window into their personality and lifestyle. Ever witness one of your girlfriends purse dumpings? I did. It can be pretty entertaining!

In mine, there is usually a pile of receipts, some probably dating back a year or more since they end up back in my bag even after a purse-cleaning (just in case). Then there’s the pulverized Tums tablet at the bottom, along with a few paper clips, a rubber band with hair stuck to it, a mint tin (and a few that got away).

On top of those items would be a sunglass case, a cleaning and repair kit for the glasses, banded stack of business cards (mine and others), a nail file, a bottle of pain reliever, antibacterial hand lotion, a cosmetic bag containing lip gloss, powder and an emergency personal product, and finally, a wallet that is never used, because the most often used credit card and cash are tucked in an interior pocket.

My friend’s purse had a lot more going on (I could tell by all the rattling). Three kinds of pain reliever, a roll of antacid, bandages, cough drops, hand sanitizer, antibacterial wipes, talcum powder, saline solution, tissues, barettes, 2 pencils (one broken and one dull), a blue pen, a black leaky pen, crayons, a piece of gum that became separated from the wrapper, a hairbrush (with gum wrapper stuck to bristles), photo album, a well worn scribble pad, dental floss, granola bar, gummy bears, a flashlight pen, water bottle caps, sugar packets, lipstick (missing lid), chapstick, emery board, an envelope stuffed with coupons, several packs of gum, mints, matches, lighter (she doesn’t smoke), loose change, credit card carrier, an ipod and keys.

You can certainly tell which one is the on-the-go mom with young kids (and very prepared). By the way, the matches and lighter were for the birthday parties where no one ever seemed to remember the light for the candles. It is surprising how often that happens (even at the office).
